How to Strategize as a Food Service Entrepreneur

Hey Hey!

As some of you may know, I am preparing for Year 4 of The Stand, my mobile food cart business.

It hasn’t been the easiest for years either.

Let me give you a quick recap.

Year 1: I spent all my tax money on my mobile food cart. I got fired 2 weeks later from my job and ended up making $10,000 in less than 90 days. I thought hit the jack pot. I made my money back and then some.

Year 2: I got a job to sustain me through the winter months. My plan was to work both. The Stand and run my program at the community center. That did not go according to plan. I went out a few times, but all my time and effort went to developing and running the program. The money was good, for the most part and I was content. I did not have to hustle as hard. I enjoyed that but I did miss The Stand and the community missed me.

Year 3: I quit my job. I loved it, but I felt very much so used (in the words of my little sister lol). After applying for the manager position and being told that I could not get it because they didn’t know what I was managing after I developed and ran the whole program for a year I was confused and I quit. I quit November 2019 and was planning to have  my most lucrative year with The Stand yet, starting May 2020. However, March 2020 Corona hit. Crazy right? If I would have stayed at my job a little longer I would have been able to collect unemployment smh lol.

Anyway, my plans changed. My plan was to go out at least 5 times a day starting May. With Corona in the community I wasn’t comfortable going out every day. I needed more information.

As a business owner I had to become strategic and be open to changing the way I make money in my business.

Instead of going out everyday as I panned, we focused on catering.

Not just any catering but catering BBQs. We also focused on vending as well, but catering is where we made the most money!

That change alone supported us in having a successful season. I couldn’t go as hard as I wanted to in the midst of COVID-19, but it pushed me to do something in my business that I always wanted to do but was scared to do.

Which was to focus on catering and vending!

I already knew what worked in my business and I did not want mess things up. I also didn’t know how I was going to price myself. It just all seemed difficult to figure out.

But Covid-19 made it happen and I am so thankful.

Year 4: The Stand is focusing on catering and vending. We are also in the process of getting a store! I am excited about that. I am working on the financial part of my business plan. I found a building that I am interested in and I am praying that all goes well. I will continue to keep you posted on my process and progress.

To all my aspiring entrepreneurs out there, I want you to know that the journey isn’t always the easiest. Most times in business, things don’t always go as planned, but the journey is still worth it in the end.

If God put a seed in you that includes starting a business, I need you to water that seed every day! You are worth it and someone is waiting for you manifest your seed so they can manifest theirs.
